1. Croydon Carers Choir songwriting grant

Croydon Carers Choir has received a small grant to create their own caring song thanks to MyCool Music Foundation.

The Croydon singers will use the foundation’s funding to write and perform a unique song about those who look after sick or disabled friends, partners and relatives.

The songwriting project is part of Croydon Carers Choir’s long-standing mission to help the borough’s hidden carers find their voices and express themselves.

Singers will work on their new song over a period of four months, and hope to finalise the piece in December.

The choir currently meets twice a month at the Carers Support Centre to sing, smile and enjoy a well-deserved break from caring.

Katie Rose, Croydon Carers Choir leader said: ‘We are so thrilled that MyCool Music Foundation are generously supporting local carers through this project. Their support will allow us to help carers develop their song-writing skills and continue to raise awareness of the issues carers face every day.’

Croydon Carers Choir members are looking forward to getting started with the new project, describing it as ‘a new exciting challenge’ and ‘good learning experience’.

Croydon Carers Choir was founded in 2014 by the Carers Support Centre and Creative Croydon. You can learn more about Croydon Carers Choir by visiting the Carers Support Centre website.

The Ladywell Unit is an acute unit and the choir, with the help of the MyCool Music Foundation, were about to deliver uplifting singing workshops for service users who were staying at the Ladywell Unit in the run up to Christmas 2019, resulting in a big sing along  include staff and friends. Much fun was had. Some of the feedback included:

“By the look of people’s faces they really enjoyed it”

“Just to sing together”

“Good for a different mood- expressing yourself”

“feeling of togetherness”

Celebrations is a club for adults with learning difficulties, of all skills and abilities, who enjoy acting and singing and performing to others at shows and events. The Group was formed in 1999 and celebrated it’s 20th year last year and currently has forty-six members. Celebrations meets every Saturday morning from 11am to 1pm at Carlton Day Centre in Sidcup.

Celebrations is a place for members to meet together socially, in a safe and encouraging environment, to develop their interests and skills in theatre and music. The club session also provides respite time for parents and carers.

Celebrations have performed annual shows for a number of years at the Mick Jagger Centre Dartford. Our 2019 show there, the “Good Ship Celebrations”, was performed to an audience of over 220.

The Group is a fully self funded, formally organised Charity, run entirely by volunteers. Financially we are supported by donations from friends and well wishers. To support the 2019 production of our show we received a grant from the MyCool Foundation. This financial support enabled us to buy in skills from the Blink Dance/Theatre Company and to purchase costumes and props all of which helped to make the show so enjoyable to perform and a resounding success.
